Engineering work is also planned. The train operator's running a reduced timetable.

As a result, the intercity operator will run only one train per hour between Euston and Wolverhampton (via Birmingham), Crewe, and Manchester.

A limited service will also operate between Glasgow and Preston.Passengers who do travel are advised to plan ahead, expect disruption, and check their last train home's details.

Kathryn O’Brien, executive director of customer experience at Avanti West Coast, expressed her disappointment at the RMT's decision to strike on 2 January, thanking customers for their patience and understanding amidst the significant disruption.

The railway service issued a caution to travellers, with a representative stating: "On the strike day we’ll have a significantly reduced service, so customers with tickets for January 2 are strongly advised to travel on alternative dates or claim a full fee-free refund. We remain open to working with the RMT to resolve the dispute."

RMT members working as train managers at Avanti West Coast will also strike every Sunday from 12 January until 25 May 2025.
