Police stopped this car after a motorist was spotted driving around with a huge ladder poking out of the back of his boot.

Officers said the bizarre set-up was made even worse by the fact the ladder was not even secured to the vehicle.

Lancashire Police said the situation presented a 'clear risk to the public' and issued the driver of the Seat Leon with a fine.

A spokesman said: "Our Roads Policing Unit are committed in preventing collisions and casualties on the road.

"The driver of this vehicle in Brierfield thought it was acceptable to drive with this ladder hanging from the rear of the vehicle with no means of making this safe.

"Driving with such a load presents a risk of danger to other members of the public. Fixed Penalty Notice issued and ladder removed from the vehicle."

The picture was posted on the Nelson, Brierfield and Barrowford Police Facebook page - and locals did not disappoint with their quick-witted responses to pictures of the car.

One said: "Maybe he was trying to get high?"

Another commented: "The dizzy heights of the standard of driving in and around Nelson and Brierfield being high-lighted yet again."

A third wrote: "That's actually class! Imagine thinking this is okay."

A fourth added: "That’s a step too far. Who rung the police on him? I’ll stop there!"
