Teenager charged over mum's death in Nelson crash
A 19-year-old man has been charged over the death of a woman who died after she was struck by a car.
Police said they received a report of a collision between a blue Volkswagen Golf and a pedestrian on Manchester Road, Nelson, Lancashire, at around 8:30pm on 15 December.
Safia Karieem, who was 51, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Six people were arrested: three 19-year-old men, a 20-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Following an investigation, and consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Abubakar Mahmood, 19, of Farrer Street, Nelson was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst disqualified.He was remanded into custody and appeared at Blackburn Magistrates Court this morning.
He has been further remanded into custody to appear at Burnley Crown Court on January 20.DCI John McNamara, of our Force Major Investigation Team said: “My thoughts remain with Safia’s loved ones in this development in our investigation.
