Man and woman accused of assaulting baby son appear in court

A man and woman accused of assaulting their three-month-old son have appeared in court.

Klevi Pirjani, 36, and Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 33, are both charged with causing grievous bodily harm to their son Miguel Pirjani, who died in the days after the alleged assault.

The two defendants, both of Percy Road in Seacombe, Wirral, appeared via videolink from separate prisons for a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court with an interpreter also appearing over the link.

Honorary Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Andrew Menary KC said a trial would take place on either 19 May or 22 September next year, with a plea and trial preparation hearing was listed for 27 January. Both defendants were remanded in custody.

Officers were called to reports of concern for a child at a property on Percy Road at about midday on Sunday 24 November, a spokesman for Merseyside Police said. Miguel was taken to hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on Friday 29 November.
