Accrington drug-free bodybuilder first Brit to be crowned champion at Natural Olympia in Las Vegas
ITV Granada Reports Sports Correspondent David Chisnall caught up with Ben Lloyd after his win in the US.
A bodybuilder and personal trainer who won one of the biggest prizes in the world of drug-free bodybuilding says he 'never thought he'd win such a good show.'
Ben Lloyd, 40, from Accrington, became the first British bodybuilder to be crowned champion at the Natural Olympia in Las Vegas, taking home a £10,000 prize.
Sporting success runs in his family, as his dad is the famous former Lancashire and England cricketer turned commentator David Lloyd.
But unlike his dad, Ben spends his days in the gym rather than the cricket pitch, where he has found his strengths lie.
Speaking on his recent success, Ben said: "Never thought I'd win such a good show. You go away just thinking I'll get in the top five maybe.
"But to win requires a lot of luck as well, because it's all judges opinions. To win is just an amazing feeling."
Competitors in this competition are banned from taking steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs - and can be punished with bans of up to four years if they break the rules.
"I think it's a healthier way of doing it", Ben said, who is drug-free. "I think anyone that is into bodybuilding should go down the drug-free route first instead of going the other way.
"It's a little bit harder, I think, in terms of the length of diets that you have to do. That's what's required to lose all the fat. You've just got to be really consistent with a diet and not slip up."It's a heck of a discipline to do it. It's a passion for all the bodybuilders, but the ambition and the dedication and the discipline is absolutely paramount because you can't you can't cut corners."
Ben's also a personal trainer and put his dad through his paces. So, could father and son one day compete together?
"It's all about genetics. I've got it from somewhere. I think they do it in over 70", Ben said. His dad responded: "No not that again. When I turned 70 he said I'll get in the over 70s World. No!"
When he won the title, Ben wrote on social media: "Your new PNBA Pro Natural Olympia Overall Champion! This is by far the greatest achievement of my bodybuilding career so far and I'm completely lost for words.
"To win one of the best natural bodybuilding shows in the world against over 20 elite level pros is beyond my wildest expectations. Thanks to everyone that has supported me."
