Large fire breaks out at industrial building in Preston
A large fire has broken out on an industrial estate in Preston today (Saturday) with smoke visible from miles away.
There are 10 fire engines at the scene of the blaze which is believed to be at Recycling Lives on Rough Hey Road Industrial Estate. The blaze involves around 200 tonnes of cars and metal.
Huge orange flames and thick black smoke can be seen coming from the scene and residents who live nearby are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors shut as fire crews tackle the blaze.
A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We have 10 fire engines at the scene along with two aerial ladder platforms.
''Firefighters are working alongside on site crews to extinguish the fire. The fire involves approximately 200 tonnes of pre shredded cars and metal.
''The High Volume Pump from Burnley has arrived at the scene to help increase the volume of water in the incident ground."
The Chief Fire Officer for Lancashire has been at the scene and says crews are working well to battle the flames and smoke.
The Environment Agency tweeted: "A significant waste fire is burning on Rough Heys Industrial Estate in #Grimsargh, Preston - please follow the Fire and Rescue Service's advice, keeping windows and doors closed to protect yourself from the smoke plume."
In the latest update, Lancashire Fire & Rescue say 70 firefighters are tackling the blaze and the response is expected to last for several more hours.
Firefighters are continuing to extinguish the fire and working with on-site teams. Around 70 firefighters remain at the scene and we expect to be here for several hours yet.
