Lancashire Police launch clampdown on spiking

Most spiking incidents are in drinks, but there's a rise in spiking by injection.

Lancashire Police has launched a new operation designed to protect pub and club goers in the run up to the busy festive period and beyond.

Operation Night Guardian is the force’s proactive response to deterring and detecting spiking offences.

It is funded by Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, and forms part of the Force’s Violence Against Women and Girls strategy.

It means there will be increased patrols in and around licensed premises by both plain clothed and uniformed officers who will be there to reassure people and look out for suspicious activity.

Special drink testing kits will be made available, so police and licensees can act quickly to reports of suspected spikings. It's hoped this will raise the risk of offenders being caught.

Lancashire Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Ian Dawson said "We know drink spiking is an issue of concern for people and we want to reassure the public that we are taking firm action to ensure they can enjoy their nights out safely".

There will also be street pastors and other support workers in key areas who will offer both emotional and practical help to those who may be in need of looking after during a night out.

If you have been a victim of crime, Lancashire Victim Services offer free and confidential support, no matter who you are, how long ago the incident happened or what took place.
