Storm Barra latest as roof torn off building on Isle of Man and Manchester's Chill Factore


Strong winds and rain has torn the roof from a property on the Isle of Man, as the region battles its second severe storm in two weeks.

A yellow weather warning is in place with strong winds, heavy rain and snow expected across the UK.

Severe gales of up to 70mph, brought by Storm Barra, have led to travel disruption across the Isle of Man and the North West and some properties have been damaged.

What is happening on the Isle of Man?

The storm has been creating huge waves which have battered the Island, flooding many parts of the prom.

In Laxey a roof has been blown off a house, while multiple trees and other objects have been uprooted across the Island.

The Ronaldsway Airport has also been closed for the day due to the high winds and structural damage to terminal roof.

A number of roads have been forced to close due to the weather, as well as the island's ferry service from Lancashire.

Fallen trees have blocked several roads around the island including:

  • Ramsey Coast Road - tree down

  • Injebreck - tree down 1138

  • Anaghcoar - tree down - blocking the road

  • Glen Helen - tree down - road blocked

  • Glen Wyllin dip - Road fully blocked

  • North of the Ginger Hall Hotel towards Ramsey - partially blocked still passable

Isle of Man's only Covid-19 test centre at the TT Grandstand has been forced to close due to Storm Barra. Appointments are being rescheduled.

Police say two elderly people have been knocked over by the wind and they have warned people to avoid putting themselves in danger by taking photos of the weather.

A spokesperson from the force said: "Please don't take risks and create extra demand on resources."

They have also urged people not to travel unless absolutely essential.

It is believed the strong winds will pick up again between 3pm and 5pm.

Damage to Manchester's Chill Factore

Winds have damaged the Beyond building, home to the Chill Factore, closing the attraction and surrounding car parks.

In a statement it said: "The Beyond building has sustained some damage due to the severe winds.

"As a result we’ve made the difficult decision to close our building and surrounding car parks with immediate effect to protect the health and safety of our guests and team.

"All activities for the remainder of the day have been cancelled and we are in the process of contacting guests with bookings for today to rearrange their activities.

"We are awaiting contractors to come and assess the damage and we will provide more information as soon as possible through our website & social media accounts."

New Brighton seafront

The beach has been completely submerged, with waves up to the top of the sea wall.

Stockport

In Bramhall, a large tree has been uprooted by severe winds and is blocking a road.

Merseyside

The M57 in Merseyside is closed both ways between J6 (Kirkby) and J7 (Liverpool) whilst we work to repair an overhead sign damaged in strong winds.There is a 45 min delays with 2.5 miles of congestion on M58 west and a 40 minute delay with 4.5 miles of congestion on M57 north.
