'We are furious': Anger over Budget announcement on dangerous cladding

ITV news correspondent Elaine Willcox has been speaking to Giles Grover from Manchester Cladiators and Helen Rowe from Runcorn.

People across the North West caught up in the cladding scandal say the announcement in the Budget for a 4% levy on large construction firms is not good enough.

Rishi Sunak made the announcement, saying the money would help create a £5billion fund to help cover the cost of repairs to dangerous cladding and fire safety defeats.

He promised to raise the money by taxing the most profitable developers from April next year.

But those homeowners affected by the crisis say it's not a new announcement and they continue to live with the fear and uncertainty of dangerous cladding.

Giles said: "We are as furious as we have been for months now. I think this is the fourth time that £5 billion has been announced. As expected the Government is rehashing old announcements."

Dangerous cladding was found on many high-rise buildings across Britain after the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.

72 people died due to how rapidly the fire spread through the tower block due to the cladding, the external insulation and the air gap between them.
