New book on shelves about 'Mr Manchester' Tony Wilson - from Salford
''This is Manchester - we do things differently here.''
Just one of the many phrases attributed to Tony Wilson, sometimes Anthony H Wilson - the Salford-born former Granada TV presenter and music mogul who became known as ''Mr Manchester.''
Now, From Manchester With Love - a new biography of his life - is on the shelves, lovingly written by the writer, author and cultural critic Paul Morley.
It tells the story of a man who became synonymous with the city he made his home. He became a household name because of his regular appearances as a presenter on Granada Television.
But alongside that high-profile career, Wilson was also the co-founder of Manchester's iconic Hacienda nightclub, Factory Records and the man who unearthed ground-breaking talent like Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays.
In an interview with Wilson's former co-presenter Lucy Meacock on Granada Reports, Morley told her: ''I liked the private, quiet Tony that you could find eventually if you looked hard enough.
''He knew so many people and so many people knew him; he was so famous in his own way, I liked the idea of finding a less public Tony and finding out where he actually was.''
Paul Morley has written about music, art and entertainment since the 1970s.
