M6 closure: One person in hospital after serious crash involving two lorries, van and car

A stretch of the M6 in Cheshire will be remain closed for resurfacing work after a serious crash involving two lorries, a van and a car.

The Southbound carriageway between junction 20 at Lymm and junction 19 for Knutsford has been completely closed since 3:30am, while officers work to clear the road.

Highways England said they don't expect the road to be re-opened until early hours tomorrow.

Police said one driver - a man in his 50s, had been taken to hospital and is believed to have sustained serious and life-threatening injuries.

An accident investigation is now taking place. Fuel and oil has leaked from one of the vehicles which police said would "take some time to clear."

A statement from North West Motorway Police said: "The closure on the M6 J20 SB will be in place for some time.

"Unfortunately after experts have examined the scene all three lanes and the hard shoulder are need to be resurfaced.

"This is to ensure it is safe for motorists."

The police have urged people to avoid the area while the closure is in place and to find an alternative route to travel on.
