Tokyo 2020: North West's golden couple Jason and Laura Kenny return home from Olympics

The North West's golden couple Jason Kenny and Laura Kenny have returned home after making Olympic history at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

After a triumphant week, Jason is now the most decorated British Olympian ever, after winning his seventh gold medal with victory in the men's keirin final.

He travelled back to the UK with his wife Laura Kenny, who is the first British woman to win gold at three consecutive Olympic Games after victory in the women’s madison alongside Katie Archibald on Friday.

Laura carried the union flag for Team GB during the closing ceremony. The 29-year-old said it was "an absolute honour to be selected as the Team GB flagbearer for the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony, and it rounds off my Games experience.

“The past 18 months have been tough for everyone, and I really hope me and my Team GB teammates have given the nation something to celebrate.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in that I am now Britain’s most successful female athlete, all I know is that I’ve worked so hard to be here and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, friends and everyone at British Cycling.”

Laura and Jason Kenny have an incredible 12 gold medals and three silver medals between them.

The power couple, who live in the village of Chelford in Cheshire with their three-year-old son Albie, were among the final Team GB members welcomed home as heroes on Monday.

There were 22 gold medals won – the fourth-best performance ever by a British team.

Strict Covid rules meant athletes were restricted in where they could go during the games and so many competitors have already flown back to the UK. 3
