Street throws surprise 100th birthday party for Doreen after plans were canceled because of the pandemic
A grandmother who had to cancel her birthday plans due to the coronavirus has celebrated her 100th birthday in style after her neighbours in Liverpool threw her a surprise street party.
Doreen Slack had been shielding at her granddaughter's house during the coronavirus lockdown but returned home this week to her long time home ahead of her birthday.
Doreen, a former secretary for the British Legion and originally from the Isle of Man, had planned to have her 100th birthday party at the her local British Legion club house in Garston.
However, coronavirus meant that the venue had to be closed and her party cancelled.
But in order to still celebrate the special milestone Doreen's granddaughter and neighbours set about organising a special surprise.
And on Wednesday afternoon, on the hottest day of the year so far, Doreen's neighbours set up gazebos outside the front of their houses along the street so that the entire street could enjoy a socially distanced street party to mark her special day.
The street party also featured live music and the food was taken care of by her neighbour who is a caterer.
Granddaughter Vix Kennedy, 47, said Doreen has a "wicked dry sense of humour", is extremely active and loves going on walks around Garston.
Doreen, whose late husband was in the King's Regiment and later made a living fixing speakers and sound equipment, says she used to make tea for the Beatles as her husband fixed their sound equipment back in the early 1960s.
Doreen has also gained a following on video sharing app, Tik Tok, where her videos have been viewed by over a 100,000 people including one video of her admiring a "muscly man".
Vix said that it was a day that her gran would never forget and that she had originally been worried that nobody would come.
