Equipment worth £10,000 stolen from heritage railway hours after it closed due to the coronavirus outbreak

Thieves have stolen equipment worth £10,000 from a heritage railway in the North West, hours after it closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The East Lancashire Railway in Bury, Greater Manchester, announced on Friday it would close to visitors and stop all services that weekend, following Government advice on social distancing.

Railway bosses said hours later brass and copper fittings were stolen from the site on Baron Street.

The registered charity, which will now have to pay for additional security, is asking for the public to book to enjoy the railway at a later date so the site can be protected for future generations.
