More than 2500 runners turn out for Liverpool Half Marathon despite coronavirus concerns

Thousands of people gathered in Liverpool for the city's half-marathon on Sunday morning.

There were fears that the 13.5 mile run could have been cancelled over concerns amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

The London marathon has been postponed until October.

But organisers in Liverpool said they worked with everyone around them to establish and ensure that the event was safe to go ahead.

Runners said they had taken necessary precautions, such as wearing gloves and keeping apart from each other, and were happy the event was going ahead:

It's possible that this may have been the last large public event in Merseyside for some time.

Plans are underway to ban mass gatherings from next week as part of the battle against coronavirus, marking a significant shift in the government's position.

The race took place in the city this morning.
