Wigan man jailed for manslaughter of his own daughter
A man from Wigan has been jailed for the manslaughter of his one-year-old daughter.
Daniel Ashurst, who's from Shevington claimed his daughter Hollie had fallen down some stairs when he carried her into a GP surgery in Standish in February last year.
The 14-month-old was later taken to hospital by paramedics with serious injuries and was in a life-threatening condition. She died just a day later.
At hospital, Ashurst made a number of different claims about what had happened to Hollie. He was arrested for wounding, but was later arrested on suspicion of murder and during questioning he answered ‘no comment’ to everything asked of him.
Ashurst was later charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. Following a three week trial, a jury found him not guilty of murder but convicted him of manslaughter.
Today he was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to 12 years in prison.
