Cumbria sergeant recognised with prestigious Bravery Award
A police office from Cumbria has been recognised at the national Police Bravery Awards for his actions in restraining and arresting a man armed with an axe.
Sergeant Kevin Milby, from Cumbria Constabulary was named as the North West winner at the 24th national Police Bravery Awards, hosted by the Police Federation of England and Wales.
Sergeant Milby received the award after responding to reports in June 2017 of a man carrying an axe and covered in blood in Dalton in Furness.
He confronted the man, Timothy Nickson, and urged him to put the down axe, but Nickson instead entered a nearby shop.
Sergeant Milby followed Nickson inside before physically restraining and handcuffing him.
Further investigation found that Nickson had, shortly before his arrest, forced his way inside an address and attacked a man with the axe, causing life-threatening injuries.
Nickson was jailed for seven years in November after admitting wounding with intent.
