Pilot from Salford Jim Wallwork was first to land in Normandy on D-Day helping to secure Pegasus Bridge
24 year old Staff Sergeant Jim Wallwork from Salford was involved in one of the most daring operations on D-Day.
He was the lead glider carrying troops to secure two bridges to prevent German tanks from reaching the beaches where Allied forces would land a few hours later.
Jim was the first pilot to land on D-Day. He landed his glider in complete darkness and the troops went on to successfully capture Pegasus Bridge
He was awarded the 'Distinguished Flying Cross' for his part in D-Day.
He died aged 93 in 2013.
