Today we remember the heroes whose courage changed the course of history, exactly 75 years ago. They were the men who stormed the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe.

The operation was codenamed Overlord - and began in the early hours with an airborne assault. It was like nothing that had ever been seen before.

Allied troops landing at five separate beaches and fighting their way inland. As the sun set that night more than 4,000 of them had been killed.

Many of those were from the North West - and a number of special services have been held today in France.

Paul Crone joined veterans at one of the key sites - Pegasus Bridge.
