A female cyclist has died after a crash near Liverpool's John Lennon Airport last night.
Emergency services were called to Hale Drive following a crash between a white Ford Fiesta, a red Ford Fiesta, a red Ford C-Max and two cyclists at around 7pm.
The cyclists, a man and a woman who are believed to have been together at the time of the incident, suffered serious injuries. They were rushed to Fazakerley Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses reported that members of the public ran to help at the scene before paramedics arrived.
Today police confirmed the sad news that a 45-year-old female cyclist had died and the other cyclist, a 39-year-old man, remained critical but stable in hospital.
A spokeswoman said the woman's family had been informed.
She added:
Police said last night that the drivers of all three cars involved stopped at the scene and were assisting officers with enquiries.
Road closures were in place at the junction of Hale Drive and Western Avenue but police said the roads reopened last night.
