JLR workers in Merseyside wait for news as 4,500 job cuts are confirmed by their company
Thousands of workers at Jaguar Land Rover in Merseyside are waiting to learn how they will be affected after the car maker today announced it was cutting 4,500 jobs.
Around 4,000 full-time staff work at the JLR site in Halewood, along with around 2,000 agency staff.
Last November the new Range Rover Evoque was unveiled, which will be built at Halewood and was hailed as safeguarding jobs there.
Jaguar Land Rover plans to make £2.5 billion of cost savings, the company has announced.
Most of the cuts are expected to be in the UK, with a voluntary programme being launched.
The savings and "cashflow improvements" will be made over the next 18 months.
The new job losses are in addition to the 1,500 workers who left the company last year.
JLR is said to have been hit by poor sales in China and a drop in demand for diesel cars, as well as Brexit uncertainty.
