Man arrested on suspicion of rape

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape following a ‘serious incident’ in Alderley Edge.

Two areas of the Cheshire village were taped off on Sunday as part of the investigation.

The Waitrose supermarket and car park on London Road were closed to both staff and customers for most of the morning.

Forensics officers were seen carrying out investigations, with photos on social media showing them placing yellow evidence markers on the ground.

Nearby St Philip’s Church was also cordoned off.

The church is around 300 metres from the Waitrose, and is just off the main road, close to Yu Alderley Edge and Piccolino restaurants.

It is understood that both were reopened later in the afternoon.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed on Tuesday that a man had been arrested in connection to the incident.
