Body recovered from water at Salford Quays

A man recovered from a stretch of water at Salford Quays has died, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were scrambled to Ontario Basin, near to Capital Quay, just before 6pm on Friday following a number of 999 calls.

Witnesses reported a man entering the water and failing to resurface.

Paramedics attended the scene alongside specialist fire service units and trained divers. Images from the scene also revealed rescue boats in the water as a search operation was launched.

A short while later that the man was taken from the water and rushed to hospital.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police last night [August 10] confirmed he was pronounced dead in hospital.

The man was aged in his 40s but hasn’t been named.

The tragedy is not being treated as suspicious and the man’s next of kin were being informed, a GMP spokesman said.

The incident also forced the cancellation of a number of Metrolink services, with no services operating between Eccles via MediaCity to Deansgate until the incident ended.
