Crews tackle a new moorland blaze at Rivington Pike

A new moorland fire has broken out on Winter Hill, near Rivington, in Lancashire.

Huge plumes of smoke were visible from the area surrounding the moorland on Thursday evening.

Fifteen fire engines from Lancashire Fire and Rescue spent the night on the moors preventing the fire spreading further.

Meanwhile the two fires less than 30 miles apart have prompted health warnings over smoke inhalation.

Public Health England is urging people to keep their doors and windows shut - despite the heatwave - because of the increased smoke and air pollution from the two fires.

A GP in the area said residents living near Saddleworth Moor have reported problems including bleeding noses, eye irritation and chest problems.
