"One-stop shops" aimed at speeding up cancer diagnosis are being trialled across the country for the first time.

Patients who present "vague" symptoms of the disease will be able to receive tests for numerous types of cancer all under one roof - instead of being referred for multiple tests.

The aim is to try to get an earlier diagnosis and start potentially life-saving treatment as soon as possible.

Where are the trials taking place?

  • University Hospital, South Manchester

  • Royal Oldham Hospital

  • North Middlesex University Hospital

  • University College London Hospital

  • Southend University Hospital

  • Queen's Hospital

  • Royal Free Hospital

  • St James's University Hospital

  • Airedale General Hospital

  • Churchill Hospital

How does it work?

GPs can refer patients suffering from "vague" symptoms including unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain and fatigue, to assessment centres, where they will undergo multiple tests for different kinds of cancers.

Some patients will be able to receive a definitive diagnosis or be given the all-clear on the same day, while others may require further tests but should receive a final result within two weeks.

The scheme, co-ordinated by NHS England, Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, is being piloted in ten areas.

It's hoped the trial will prevent patients facing delays just because they have non-specific symptoms.

If the trial is a success, more centres will be established across the country.
