It was a case of so near yet so far for Lancashire's Dave Ryding who sadly crashed out of the opening alpine skiing World Cup event in Finland with victory in his sights.

He was on course to become Britain's first ever alpine skiing World Cup winner. He won a silver last year in the slalom and was close to going one better and taking a gold over.

He was half a second up on his rivals on his final run when disaster struck and he crashed out.

It was a frustrating end for Dave but it does show that he's a medal contender for next year's Winter Olympics.

A busy schedule means he rarely gets back home these days. But before he jetted off for the start of the new season Chris Hall caught up with him at the slope where he started skiing.
