Transplant surgeon appeals for the return of his specialist operating glasses
A transplant surgeon has issued an appeal for the return of his specialist operating glasses needed for intricate life-saving operations after they were stolen from his car.
Omar Masood’s ‘loupes’ – which he needs to perform surgery – were taken from the boot of his car, along with his MacBook Pro laptop, outside his home in Whitefield on Tuesday night.
The dad-of-two works at both the Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital carrying out kidney and pancreas transplants.
He is also one of just a handful of surgeons in the country able to perform extremely complex organ retrieval operations, and travels across the UK with his work.
Mr Masood posted an appeal on social media asking for help to get the glasses back. He says he has been overwhelmed with the response, with some people even offering to help raise money for new ones.
Mr Omar says he is currently having to use a very basic pair of loupes that he had as a back up but explained they are generic, and not custom fit for him.
The stolen operating glasses are described as having a red and black frame. On one arm they say the make ‘Xenosys’ and on the other his name ‘Omar Masood’.
They had been in a leather clad box, also with his name on it, with battery packs, inside a shiny black rucksack when they were taken.
A spokesman for GMP said: “We received a report that at some point between 10pm on July 10 and 7.30am on July 11, a vehicle on Cartmel Close in Bury was broken into by an unknown offender.
“They stole a pair of operating glasses and a MacBook Pro laptop. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.”
