Noughties pop stars Atomic Kitten are to headline Liverpool's Pride Festival next month.

The Liverpool girl band, featuring the original line up of Natasha Hamilton, Kerry Katona and Liz McClarnon stepped in after initial headliner Marc Almond cancelled his appearance.

The former Soft Cell frontman, who's from Southport, said an unexpected commitment means he can no longer appear at the festival, taking place at St George's Hall on July 29.

Almond, 60, has promised to return to the city for next year's pride.

Atomic Kitten shot to fame in the Noughties with a string of hits including Number One single Whole Again, which remains one of the biggest UK hits of the past decade, reaching the top chart spot in 19 countries.

Now in its eighth consecutive year, Liverpool Pride festival will take place across two days – Saturday 29 July and Sunday 30 July.

The theme of this year’s Pride is International Love, complementing the city’s wider 50 Summers of Love festival, which celebrates 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality.
