A grandmother was astonished to find a letter from a late family member land on her door mat - more than 40 YEARS after it was posted.

Marjorie Kreibich, 81, was sifting through the post on Tuesday when she noticed two strange looking envelopes. One of them was addressed to both her and her late husband, Brian, who passed away nearly 26-years-ago.

It was dated June 24, 1975 and had a five-and-a-half pence stamp in the corner.

Mrs Kreibich opened the envelope and discovered a letter inside been sent by her Brian’s uncle Bill, thanking the couple for sending him a gardening book for his birthday - 42-years-ago.

“It was very unusual and they looked very dated,” Mrs Kreibich said.“I just couldn’t believe it when I looked in the envelope. Bill passed away many years ago.”

The envelope also contained an old photograph of Mrs Kreibichdaughter’s daughter Pamela, who is now 62, ballet dancing as a child.

The package was sent from Knutsford in Cheshire to Mrs Kreibich’s home in Middleton, where she has lived for 44 years..

The second envelope, posted in August 1975, contained correspondence from an old savings account firm. Mrs Kreibich suspects the letters may have traveled around the world before finally reaching her door.

Plastic labels had been attached to the envelopes by Royal Mail bosses apologising for them being damaged ‘at the point of entry into the UK’. It is thought the letters were accidentally sent abroad before making their way back to Greater Manchester.
