Manchester's magical muse: J.K. Rowling reveals Quidditch was invented in Manchester hotel room

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has revealed that she came up with the magical sport of Quidditch while staying at a hotel in Manchester.

The team game described as a a mixture of lacrosse, rugby, and dodgeball plays a pivotal role in the Harry Potter books and a new ‘muggle’ version - without the brooksticks - is becoming increasingly popular.

In a tweet was to promote the new QI book, called 1,342 QI Facts To Leave You Flabbergasted The QI Elves claimed: “Quidditch, digestive biscuits, and overdrafts were all invented in Edinburgh. More fabulous facts.”

The author was quick to point out their mistake, telling her followers Manchester is actually the home of Quidditch.

In 2013 Rowling explained the context of inventing Quidditch in an annotated version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone. She said: “[Quidditch] was invented in a small hotel in Manchester after a row with my then boyfriend”

Adding: “I had been pondering the things that hold a society together, cause it to congregate and signify its particular character and knew I needed a sport.”
