Sunday morning saw Clitheroe native Michael Bisping retain his UFC middleweight title to veteran Dan Henderson in front of a sold out crowd.

Despite the unusually late start time, Manchester Arena was packed to the rafters with an energetic crowd all behind the champion. It was a chance at revenge for Bisping, who was knocked out by Henderson in 2009, as well as the first defence of his title in his hometown.

The Manchester crowd got behind the hometown hero as the first round ended in fiery fashion, Bisping falling to the floor following a barrage of Henderson punches. Bisping managed to weather the storm and the third round was much better for him as he settled back into the bout, landing a number of significant strikes.

The bout saw all five rounds fought as both men bravely battled for the title but ultimately Bisping would win via a unanimous decision, with Dan Henderson subsequently confirming his retirement.

Although Bisping could not attend the post-fight press conference, he said: “Of course, Dan Henderson hits hard and he opened up a couple of big cuts on my face. But I feel completely fine, I remember everything about the fight. The crowd were amazing. I could hear the energy from the fans throughout the entire event. Big respect to Dan Henderson. It’s amazing what he’s achieved in this sport and to be able to fight at this level, and bring it like that, at his age – I just have massive respect for him. Now I look forward to the next one."

Manchester’s Marc Diakiese also won earlier in the night, via stoppage with punches in the second round. After the fight he stated how he plans to go on: “This is the best feeling in the world. I’ve worked so hard for this moment and now it’s here and I’m starting to enjoy it. Whatever UFC gives me next, I’m here. I’m looking to take on anybody and clean up the division."
