Hillsborough 96 posthumously given Freedom of Liverpool

The Freedom of the City of Liverpool is being posthumously awarded later, to the 96 football fans who died at Hillsborough.

A special ceremony is taking place at the Town Hall where medals and scrolls will also be given to the key figures who supported the families for the past 27 years.

They include the former Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish and his wife, Marina who attended every funeral and Professor Phil Scraton, a member of the Hillsborough Independent Panel.

The Right Reverend James Jones, former Bishop of Liverpool and who chaired the Hillsborough Independent Panel, is also set to receive Freedom of the City, but due to his work commitments with the Home Secretary, he is unable to collect the accolade until early in the New Year.
