An armed forces charity has been left homeless after a community pavilion was torched in Carrington.

Fire crews were called to football fields off Manchester Road just before 11.45pm last night.

Pictures show the devastation caused to the building, after what Carrington Parish Council have branded an “act of mindless vandalism”.

Andy Graham, co-founder of local veterans’ charity The Mess which was set up recently to offer support to armed forces and emergency services personnel, says the fire has rendered the pavilion useless, and that the damage is too severe to repair.

He said:

Andy, who lives in Carrington himself, is a former firefighter and services in the Army and says he knows first hand how important charities like The Mess are to help servicemen and women settle back into civilian life.

The incident is now being investigated by Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
