Greater Manchester has been named Britain’s most popular animal dumping-ground.

Shocking new figures released by the RSPCA reveal that 770 animals were abandoned across the region last year - equating to nearly 10% of the national total.

There were also 330 animals dumped in Lancashire and 313 in Merseyside.

Experts warn that the number of lost pets handed into RSPCA centres and clinics in Manchester - including abandoned dogs, cats, rabbits and horses - will soar in July.

770 animals were rescued across Greater Manchester last year, including ten-year-old Elmo, was abandoned in a shopping trolley in Birkenhead.

Other recent cases include five kittens and three adult cats dumped in a zipped-up laundry bag in Wirral.

RSPCA superintendent Simon Osborne said the charity was bracing itself for another summertime influx of unwanted animals in the dumping capital.

The figures relate to animals found and nursed back to health and those which pass away.
