Long-term seafront protection meeting held in Isle of Man
A public meeting to discuss how to prevent harbour flooding and wave overtopping has taken place in the Isle of Man.
Members from the Department of Infrastructure liased with Rushen Parish Commissioners last Thursday to exchange views on sea protection at Shore Road, Bay Ny Carrickey.
Approximately 70 residents attended the meeting, where they listened to presentations from members of the Department in which they explained the impact of extreme weather and rising sea levels due to climate change.
Numerous ideas were raised, including the extension of rock armour, a breakwater, a new sea wall and a beach recharge scheme.
Shore Road has been marked as a high risk area during extreme weather, one of many areas in January 2014 to have suffered from storm surges.
Last year, the majority of the Isle of Man's coastal areas were subject to high tides of up to 8.1 metres, as well as sightings of raw sewage, debris and open manholes.
