Martinez hails Kenwright over Stones transfer saga
Roberto Martinez has praised Everton chairman Bill Kenwright for refusing to cave in to Chelsea over defender John Stones after the England international's transfer request was publicly rejected.
Kenwright released a statement yesterday declaring that Stones' attempt to force through a move to Stamford Bridge would not be considered after three bids were rejected for the 21-year-old.
Martinez has remained steadfast in his belief that Stones would not be sold and credited Kenwright for also remaining strong with a declaration he hopes will now draw a line under the whole saga.
"Of course the fans at one point thought they were going to lose one of the most-loved assets at our football club and the emotions are going to be high and full of feelings that you're going to show," Martinez said.
"John knows where he is; the fans, they are going to play an incredible role in helping John to settle in and to get back to being fully focussed on winning football games for Everton."
