A hotel chain based in Greater Manchester has been rated as the worst in the UK for the second year running.

Manchester Evening News reports that Britannia Hotels came bottom in a list of 29 chains in a survey of 6,000 travellers carried out by consumer magazine Which?

The Altringham-based business, which has hotels that include The Adelphi in Liverpool or Sacha’s, on Tib Street in Manchester, was given a score of just 33 per cent in the survey – compared to the winning score of 83pc for luxury chain Sofitel.

Britannia, owned by businessman Alex Langsam, was awarded just one star – the lowest possible rating – for categories including bedrooms, cleanliness and whether the description of the hotel matched reality.

Which? members criticised its hotels for being ‘run down’ and ‘well past their best-buy dates’.

The Hale Road-based company also came bottom in the magazine’s survey last year – scoring 36pc.

Sofitel and Premier Inn ranked first and second respectively based on nine categories in the survey, including customer service and value for money. Old English Inns finished second bottom, with a score of 50pc.

No one from Britannia was available to comment on the survey results.
