Gymnasts Max Whitlock and Rebecca Tunney were crowned British champions at Liverpool's Echo Arena on Saturday.

Double Olympic medallist Whitlock, who won the English title earlier this month, finished with an all-around score of 89.000 to defend his British title and beat Dan Purvis into silver with 87.200, while Dan Keatings won bronze with 87.050.

Liverpool teenager Tunney, who was the youngest member of Team GB at London 2012, won the women's competition with a score of 56.750 across their four pieces of apparatus, ahead of Beckie Downie (56.350) and first year senior Claudia Fragapane (55.700).

Last year's winner Gabby Jupp did not compete as she continues her recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

The championships form the last trials for Commonwealth Games selection and Whitlock impressed, topping the standings in the floor and pommel horse.

He scored 15.850 on the latter to best European champion Keatings by 0.050 of a mark, with Olympic silver medallist Louis Smith finishing in third on 15.750 as only a tenth of a mark separated the top three.

Smith also competed in the parallel bars as he continues his comeback with the aim of qualifying for this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but finished in sixth place.

Keatings and Purvis, who look set to represent Scotland in the Games, topped the standings in the parallel bars and rings respectively, while fellow Olympians Kristian Thomas and Sam Oldham won the vault and high bar.

Tunney finished first on the uneven bars with an impressive 15.250, while Fragapane beat veteran Lisa Mason to gold on the vault and also won gold on floor. Hannah Whelan, meanwhile, impressed on the beam to take gold on the apparatus.
