St Helens Mourns For Prescott

Steve Prescott raised half a million pounds for charity

A funeral will be held today for St Helens rugby league star Steve Prescott.

The 39-year-old passed away after battling a rare form of stomach cancer for the last seven years. He raised almost half a million pounds for research in a series of endurance challenges, including marathons, walks and bike rides.

Prescott was part of an all-conquering St Helens team. An outstanding full back, he scored 340 points for his home town club during five glittering seasons.

He was twice a Wembley winner in the Challenge Cup Final and helped Saints claim the inaugrual Super League title in 1996. After spells with Wakefield and Hull, injury forced his retirement in 2003.

Steve's relentless fund-raising in the face of terminal illness was recognised in 2010 with a trip to Buckingham Palace for the MBE.

His funeral service will be held at St Mary's Lowe House Church in St Helens at 11am.
