How to prepare for strong winds

Strong winds can cause damage to property

A Met Office Yellow weather warning for high winds in the region takes effect at 00.05am on Monday and lasts until 9pm.

A Yellow warning means be aware and warns of potential travel disruption like closed bridges. It also means possible localised interruptions to power supplies, fallen trees and other debris like fallen roof slates.

This is the Met Office advice of what to do if severe winds are forecast.

Before the storm

Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture, wheelie bins, trampolines or anything else that could be blown into windows.

Close and securely fasten doors and windows.

Park vehicles in a garage, if available. If possible keep vehicles clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences.

During the storm

Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings or trees.

Do not go outside to repair damage during the storm.

Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary. If possible drive in daylight hours.

After the storm

Be careful not to touch any electrical/telephone cables that have blown down or are still hanging.

Do not walk too close to walls, buildings or trees that could have been weakened.

Make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them to make arrangements for repairs.
