Blackpool closing in on new manager

Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston is believed to have established a two-man shortlist for the vacant managers post at Bloomfield Road.

Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton remains the favourite to get the nod following Ian Holloway's departure to Crystal Palace on Friday. Former Burnley and Bolton boss Owen Coyle is also being strongly linked with the role.

Oyston has made it clear he wants to make a swift appointment, and had initially said the role would be filled on Monday.

"I've seen some of our near neighbours, Championship clubs in and around Lancashire, take some time over it and the instability has not done them any favours," he said.

"I'd like to move quite quickly."

Money though could yet delay Blackpool's move for Appleton. Reports suggest Pompey have demanded £200,000 for his services, a fee the Tangerines are reluctant to pay.

Ian Holloway's former assistant at the club Steve Thompson has declared his interest in the job, but his name appears to have slipped down the club's list of potential candidates.
