Students in the North West boast the third highest proportion of top grades in this year's GCSE results. They share the third place spot with students in East Anglia.

The North West recorded 12 per cent of A* grades, accounting for 13 per cent of this year's entries, according to the results published by the Joint Council for Qualifications.

Entries from private school pupils made up seven per cent of this year's entries, however it accounted for 15.6 per cent of A* and A grades nationally.
