High turnout expected in Alderney election

Politicians in Alderney are expecting a high turnout in the election today.

Polling stations were reportedly busy this morning on the day which will see five new States members appointed.

Voting is set to close at 6.40 pm and an announcement due around 9 pm.

Returning Officer Victor Brownlees believes turnout is so high because of the difficult economic conditions in Alderney at the moment.

I think people are incredibly engaged with the issues at the moment. we talk continually about transport- that is a perennial problem for us.

Next week we have a visit from the Strategic Review on Aurigny coming over so people are talking about that. People are talking about the FAB link and what the future holds in respect to Tidal.

And there's a lot of people with a lot of very good ideas who want to make a contribution to the future of the island.

– Victor Brownlees, Returning Officer
