Online petition to protect St Lawrence church from development

Islanders who are against extending a historic Jersey church have set up a petition online.

Signatories say they are angered by plans to add a kitchen area and disabled toilet to St Lawrence parish church, which dates back to the 1100s.

Planning authorities initially rejected the proposals, but they were given the go-ahead after an appeal.

We believe that the proposed extension will permanently damage the historic integrity, character, and appearance of our Church. Whilst fully welcoming the efforts to improve access for everyone to our Church, we believe that some of the proposed facilities are already fully available in the immediate locality. Our Church is one of the most important historic buildings in our Island and the British Isles, and every care must to be taken to ensure that it is protected for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.
