Guernsey has 'world class legislation' fighting financial crime

Deputy Lyndon Trott

A leading Guernsey politician has hit back at accusations that the Channel Islands are part of the 'largest tax evasion network in the world'.

The comments were made by the UK's Shadow Home Secretary during a debate on new laws fighting financial crime, which she says should apply to Crown Dependencies.

But, Deputy Lyndon Trott Guernsey has 'world class legislation' on tax transparency and finance.

He says that includes 'robust regulation...fighting financial crime'.

Guernsey has been confirmed as meeting all the relevant international standards set by international bodies such as MONEYVAL and the OECD.

This demonstrates that Diane Abbott’s comments are ill-informed and inaccurate. In failing to acknowledge the island’s leading standards in this area, she has also not recognised where the UK has not been able to keep up with our lead, for example in the regulation of trust providers, something the Bailiwick has done since 2001.
