Anthony McMahon recovering well after leg surgery

Anthony McMahon's parents say he is recovering well following surgery to lengthen his left leg.

The ten-year-old Guernsey boy was born with abnormal hip joints and short legs. In 2008 surgeons lengthened his right leg but the Health Department refused to pay for a similar operation on his left leg.

His parents, Ian McMahon and Kerry Croxton, started a fundraising campaign six months ago to raise £120,000 for the surgery.

Anthony has been fitted with an external fixator, fitted to his left leg and secured by pins screwed into his hip, femur and tibia to enable lengthening.

He is now undergoing physiotherapy in Florida where the surgery took place. The family will stay there until August.

Anthony will require a further operation towards the end of the year which is parents hope to continue to raise money for.

We are delighted to share the great news of Anthony's progress. We really would like to express our sincere thanks everyone who helped get us here by sharing actual physical evidence, disproving decisions that have been made. We are so glad that perseverance and community spirit allowed Anthony to be in the right place, with the right man for the right surgical intervention. We hope that seeing Anthony upon his return with his new leg will reward all.
