States warned 'don't fall at last hurdle' over equal marriage plans

An equality charity is urging Guernsey's States not to 'fall at the last hurdle' with plans for same-sex marriage.

The government has outlined plans to introduce the new law today.

The legislation will be discussed in December at the States Assembly.

It follows Jersey's step to bring it in by 2017 after the first ever pride event was held earlier this year.

If it goes ahead in Guernsey, churches would be able to opt out.

My message to States members is we're really pleased that we've got so far. It would be an awful shame to fall at the last hurdle and we really would like to see the law introduced as soon as possible.
