States set to debate public sector cuts after protest march

Public sector workers marched through St Helier on Saturday

Jersey's government will debate its Medium Term Financial Plan tomorrow.

It comes after thousands of public sector workers marched through St Helier at the weekend, calling for plans to cut job and freeze pay to be scrapped.

The proposals are part of Ministers' aims to save £70 million.

We need to have a much more intelligent, wider, more inclusive debate on the future of funding for the public services. We cannot make the cuts that they want to make and have a meaningful public service left at the end.

– Robert Ward, President of Jersey NUT
