Christmas lights switch on - when & where?
The switch on of St Helier's Christmas lights takes place tonight and Guernsey's Tree of Joy is being lit up!
Guernsey youngster to make Tree of Joy come to life
Lucy Robins, an 11-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis, will turn on the lights on this years Rotary Tree of Joy in Guernsey this evening.
Lucy will attend a special reception on the balcony at Long Port before she presses the button to switch on the lights at 6pm tonight.
The Amherst Primary School pupil undergoes physiotherapy several times a day and is on permanent medication for the condition. On average she spends six to nine weeks a year in hospital.
Lucy was diagnosed with the genetic condition, which affects the lungs and digestive system, at five months old.
Rotary Club of Guernsey president elect John Hollis said that switching on the Rotary Tree of Joy each year had become a special moment for Guernsey, with many islanders saying that it marks the start of the Christmas spirit for them.
FUN FACT: The Tree of Joy on the Weighbridge roundabout is the tallest light tree in Europe and was first put up in 2005.
