No witnesses turned up at the trial of murdered Guernsey woman Sarah Groves today.
They were supposed to speak at the court in India to give evidence about the death of the 24-year-old back in April 2013.
The prosecution claims they do not have their names to find out why they didn't appear before.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has said that the situation is ‘unacceptable’ and needs to be addressed.
The trial has been plagued by delays, including flooding in the area and no police being available.
My colleague spoke to the Public Prosecutor for an update on today’s proceedings in court. He confirmed that no witnesses turned up today. When asked whether he had names for the witnesses who were supposed to turn up, he replied he did not.
He requested a follow up call tomorrow when further time has been set aside for the case and gave an assurance that he would try to obtain names for the witnesses scheduled to appear.
This is an unacceptable situation which needs to be addressed in whatever way we can. All we can do right now, however, is to wait for tomorrow’s proceedings to take place and assess the situation thereafter.
